Monday 30 May at 14.30 - Venice Boat Show Public presentation and seminar of the GreenHull project: “Green technologies for cleaning ship hulls in the water

The GreenHull project intends to contribute to the reduction of the pollution problem in the Northern Adriatic Sea by cleaning biological fouling on hulls, improving the performance of ships and reducing the introduction of alien species into the environment.

The sea knows no boundaries: the approach of cross-border cooperation in the public and private sector is necessary in defining guidelines for the control, monitoring and management of water and waste biological fouling on hulls and ensuring more effective cross-border management.

GreenHull, which will be a guest at the stand of CORILA (Consortium for the Coordination of Research on the Venice Lagoon System) at the next Venice Boat Show in Nappa 90 at the Venice Arsenal, will present the main results obtained in the first 24 months of the project and show the prototype of the multisensor underwater robotic platform with cleaning accessory. Appointment on Monday 30 May at 2.30 p.m. in the Sala Modelli (Salone Nautico, Arsenale, Venice). At the end of the presentation there will be a public workshop on the theme of “New technologies for cleaning ship hulls in water and challenges in waste management”.

GreenHull and CORILA’s participation in the Venice Boat Show is part of EU Green Week, the annual opportunity to discuss European environmental policy with policymakers, leading environmentalists and stakeholders from Europe and beyond. This year’s edition focuses on the European Green Deal, the EU’s transformative and sustainable growth strategy for a resource-efficient and climate neutral Europe by 2050.

The GreenHull project

In the GreenHull project, three technologies are being developed to clean biofouling from the hulls of boats without taking them out of the water, while avoiding the release of toxic substances and harmful organisms into the local marine environment. The wastewater is in fact purified in the dedicated treatment plant and returned to the sea, in compliance with legal requirements.

GreenHull also aims to strengthen cross-border cooperation in this emerging sector between various stakeholders in the North Adriatic area, such as ports, marinas and local authorities, by proposing guidelines and strategies for cleaning biofouling from boats in the water and managing the waste produced.

The project is supported by the Interreg V-A Italy-Slovenia cooperation programme, financed by the European Regional Development Fund, and has five partners from Slovenia and Italy, representing research, academia and industry.

The Venice Boat Show

The GreenHull project will be present at the Venice Boat Show, the main international exhibition dedicated to the boating industry, from Saturday 28 May to Sunday 5 June 2022, at the Venice Arsenal, the symbolic site of the centuries-old military rule of the Serenissima Republic of Venice and the beating heart of its shipbuilding industry. The exhibition space and the water basin in front of it will be the place to meet the excellence of international yachting. This is an event that explores every aspect of navigation and shipbuilding: design, engines, environment.

You are invited to the public presentation and subsequent round table, as per the programme.

Speakers are requested to attend the event in person, while the public can follow the workshop either in person (after registering at greenhull@corila.it) or online. Further instructions will follow soon.

COOPERATION IS GREEN. Examples of cross-border collaboration

The third meeting of the GreenHull Project Coordination Committee took place on 29 March 2021. It was an opportunity for the partners to discuss the progress made in the last quarter and to present the third prototype of ITV (innovative green technology) that will be developed by the project: an additional multisensor system specific for the cleaning of coastal and underwater structures of the biological encrustations.
The objective of the new BTI is in line with the EU's 'Green Deal' strategy as it helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce marine pollution and help protect local ecosystems and promote an economy green.

Date: 21.09.2021
Time: 14:30 – 16:30
Place: Online
The Interreg V-A Italy-Slovenia Cooperation Programme celebrates the 10th anniversary of the European Cooperation Day with a green touch!
The main objective of the event is to raise awareness of the advantages and values of European cooperation, presenting the results achieved by the Interreg Programme involving Italy and Slovenia. This year, the standard projects of Axis 3, dedicated to the protection and promotion of natural and cultural resources, of the 7/2019 call will be the protagonists. The ACQUAVITIS, BEE-DIVERSITY, ECO-SMART, ENGREEN, GREEN HULL and TRETAMARA projects will illustrate the good practices implemented for the creation of an innovative cross-border system dedicated to the conservation and development of biodiversity in natural and marine habitats. The event will be a special occasion to learn more about the activities carried out by the projects, even during the covid-19 emergency period.

Meeting of the Project Committee

The meeting of the Project Committee, hosted at the NIB headquarters in Piran, was the first opportunity for the consortium partners to discuss GreenHull project progress. Each partner presented their achievements in the first six month period, despite the situation linked to the emergency due to Covid-19:

  • first field trials to characterize biofouling on the hulls of ships in Slovenian Istria;
  • first experiments to define the cleaning methodology of the waste water produced during the process;
  • first prototypes of the mechanical cleaning system for ship hulls;
  • analysis of the current international, EU and national regulatory context on water policy;
  • review of hull cleaning systems already available on the market.
